Ashwani Taneja

Mr. Ashwani Taneja is a senior legal and tax professional with over 25 years of extensive experience in taxation, economic offences, and commercial laws. His professional journey reflects a rare combination of technical expertise, courtroom advocacy, and judicial responsibility. He has practiced both as a Chartered Accountant and Advocate, and has also served as a Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) under the Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India.

This diverse professional exposure has enabled him to engage with legal issues from multiple perspectives—ranging from advisory and compliance to litigation and appellate adjudication—thereby offering a holistic understanding of fiscal and regulatory frameworks. His work is marked by analytical rigor, practical insight, and a strong appreciation of statutory intent and judicial discipline.

Mr. Taneja holds professional qualifications as a Lawyer, Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary, and Cost & Management Accountant, and also possesses a Diploma in Information Systems Audit (DISA). This multidisciplinary academic foundation allows him to seamlessly integrate legal reasoning with financial, accounting, and systems-based analysis, particularly in matters involving complex transactions, regulatory scrutiny, and cross-border considerations.


PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Mr. Taneja commenced his professional career after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. In the initial phase of his practice, he was actively involved in tax planning, tax litigation, business advisory, due diligence, and statutory as well as internal audits of business enterprises. This phase of his career provided him with substantial exposure to corporate functioning, financial reporting, compliance mechanisms, and risk evaluation across diverse industries.

In 2006, he transitioned into legal advocacy and began practicing as an Advocate, appearing before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, various High Courts, and the Supreme Court of India. His practice involved handling complex tax disputes, matters concerning interpretation of taxing statutes, and issues involving constitutional and administrative law principles. He represented a wide spectrum of clients, including individuals.

In 2015, Mr. Taneja was selected and appointed as a Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, where he served until 2017. During his tenure, he authored and co-authored more than 2,000 judicial orders and judgments, dealing with intricate issues in domestic and international taxation. These matters often involved voluminous records, transfer pricing disputes, cross-border transactions, and questions of law of recurring importance. His role on the Tribunal required careful appreciation of facts, detailed statutory interpretation, and balanced adjudication, contributing to the development and consistency of tax jurisprudence.

Upon completion of his tenure at the ITAT, Mr. Taneja resumed professional practice in 2017 and has since been engaged in litigation and advisory work across a wide range of economic and commercial laws.

INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE

Mr. Taneja has travelled extensively in India and abroad. He attended a Conference on International Taxation under the aegis of the UN Model Tax Convention at the United Nations Headquarters, New York. He was also invited by the Chief Justice of the Tax Court of Canada and was recommended for membership of the International Association of Tax Judges (IATJ).

He became a member of the IATJ in 2017 and has participated in its Global Tax Conferences, including the conference held in Helsinki, Finland.
